EGLA AT THE LEXANDGAMING CONFERENCE TO DEBATE ON ONLINE GAMBLING STANDARDISATION

The legal gambling review LEXANDGAMING has organised a conference on Italian Gambling Sector Sustainability last 25th November 2014 in Rome .
The most relevant gambling segments in Italy – such as AWP/VLT business, betting data transmission centers issue and online gambling – have been tackled in the presence of the Italian gambling regulator (ADM) representatives, Public prosecutors, State attorneys and renowned academics.
Within the legal panel on online gambling, EGLA has debated on possible online gambling equipment standardization as announced by the Annual Union work programme for European standardisation for 2015 and according to the results of the latest Workshop organized in Brussels with the industry stakeholders on the 29th October 2014.
The legal purpose and the concrete modalities of the standardization process have been discussed taking into consideration the opinions expressed by the ADM and the French gambling Authority ARJEL through their contributions.
What came up very clearly from the debate is that this standardization would not imply as such a regulatory harmonization, leading to a mutual recognition of gambling licenses among Europe. A European standardization of the online gambling equipment is a voluntary process that cannot engrave the distribution of competence between European institutions and State members or contravene any competition law principles.
Should there be an online gambling equipment standardization among the EU State members, the process could lead, according to the University Polytechnic of Milan presentation, to reduce the administrative costs for the online gambling licensees and to foster online gambling consumers’ protection.
It is now time for the industry stakeholders to make this standardisation happen!
