History and Trends of the Italian Remote Gambling

This article provides a summary of the history of remote gambling in Italy, in terms of legislation and of market size and trends. The analysis shows that:

• after a period of growth lasting until late 2010, Italian legal remote gambling experienced limited development in the years following, which was entirely due to the introduction of new games and the correspondent channelling of illegal gambling into the legal circuit;

• the Italian remote gambling market, despite what much of public opinion may believe, is quite small compared to the general Italian gambling market;

• the Agency of Customs and Monopolies (ADM) data processed by the Politecnico di Milano shows that the overwhelming majority of Italian players spend small sums of money in remote gambling.

With regard to security conditions, online gambling in Italy is closely regulated and is under real-time control by the ADM, which adopts a system recognised as particularly effective at European and international level.
